Matter of Black (MOB) and BlackOwned905 are proud to announce the in-person return of #EmancipationDaySTC, an annual celebration in St. Catharines set to reawaken old traditions and foster greater solidarity and pride among the Black Canadian community in memory of its remarkable achievements and in face of persistent racism.

Free events that feature workshops, conversations, live performances and a market featuring BlackOwned905 businesses will take place from July 29 to August 1, presented in partnership with the FirstOntario Performing Arts Centre and City of St. Catharines.

Everyone is invited to join in on the celebration and are encouraged to share their participation with the #EmancipationDaySTC.

Weekend Schedule

Friday, July 29

  • 2 p.m.: Flag raising at St. Catharines City Hall with the organizers from Matter of Black, Black Owned 905, FirstOntario Performing Arts Centre and City of St. Catharines.

Saturday, July 30

  • 4 p.m. – 9 p.m.: Black Owned 905 Market
    St. Paul and Carlisle Streets – Downtown Promenade

  • 5 p.m.: Special performance by SHAD
    St. Paul and Carlisle Streets – Downtown Promenade

  • Dusk: Summer of Soul Film screening at the FirstOntario Performing Arts Centre Backyard – Mann Raceway Plaza

Sunday, July 31

Emancipation Day Monday, August 1

Matter of Black and Black Owned 905 presents #EmancipationDay STC in Lakeside Park with live entertainment and activities ALL DAY LONG! Featuring incredible Black talent from Niagara and beyond, activities for the whole family and food options on site., this will be an incredible day of music and celebration presented by Matter of Black.

  • 10 a.m. – 11 a.m.: Soka Fit on the beach
  • 1 p.m. – 6 p.m.: DJ Rennie
  • 2 p.m.: Drumming Performance by Alpha Rhythm Roots
  • 3 p.m. – 3:45 p.m.: Drumming Workshop with Alpha Rhythm Roots
    * Registration is required It is recommended that kids be 11 years old and up to truly benefit from the workshop.

  • 6:30 p.m.: Spoken Word with Dwayne Morgan
  • 7 p.m.: LMT Connection
    The Emancipation Day celebration caps off with a live outdoor performance by Niagara’s premiere funk and soul band, the LMT Connection featuring the legendary Motown frontman Leroy Emmanuel.

  • In the spirit of celebration, the TD Niagara Jazz Festival is proud to be honouring Black History and the tireless courage of so many ancestors as a part of Emancipation Day in St. Catharines. On August 1, enjoy a day-long offering of music, spoken word, art, songs, Black History, and African wisdom Presented by Matter of Black and Black-Owned 905, in partnership with the TD Niagara Jazz Festival and the FirstOntario Performing Arts Centre, and supported by the City of St. Catharines.
