Take the Scenic Route
For babies, toddlers and anyone who could use a little fresh air, choose a paved stretch of the Welland Canals Parkway Trail for an easy fall walk.
Bring the stroller or carrier and watch for ships making their way through the Welland Canal. With beautiful weather, waterfront views and plenty of movement along the water, even the smallest travellers will have something to see.
There is no need to cover a particular distance. Turn around when the snacks run low or little legs have had enough.
Tip: While you are there, stop at the St. Catharines Museum and Welland Canals Centre at Lock 3. Explore the city’s history inside, then head to the viewing platform for an even closer look at ships travelling through the canal.
Farm Friends and Pumpkin Fun
Before the animals leave for the season, make your way to Happy Rolph’s Animal Farm for an easy family outing with no itinerary required.
More than 15 acres of parkland along Lake Ontario give families plenty of room to wander. Meet the farm animals, watch the birds, explore the gardens and let the kids take the lead toward the playground.
For a little extra fall fun, plan your visit around Pumpkinville on October 17th from 10am-2pm. The annual celebration fills the farm with free seasonal activities and festivities, giving families one more reason to enjoy Happy Rolph’s one last time this year.
Take One More Carousel Ride
Some family traditions are too good to leave behind with summer.
The historic Lakeside Park Carousel continues operating on weekends until October 12. Choose from 68 beautifully restored, hand-carved animals and enjoy a few turns on this beloved Port Dalhousie landmark for just 5 cents.
Pair your ride with a walk through Lakeside Park, time at the playground or lunch nearby. Just leave enough time for the inevitable request to ride one more time.
Bring Home the Harvest
Give the kids an important fall assignment: choosing what comes home from Overholt Orchards Farm Market.
The family-operated St. Catharines market offers locally grown produce and seasonal finds straight from the farm, including pumpkins, apples, apple cider, squash, honey, and hay. Let everyone choose an apple or nominate the pumpkin that deserves a place on the front step.
Keep the harvest hunt going at the St. Catharines Farmers Market in downtown St. Catharines. Open Thursdays and Saturdays, the market brings together local growers, bakers and makers and their fresh Niagara produce, locally baked treats and handcrafted goods. Give each child a small tote bag and let them choose one local treat or ingredient to bring home.
Together, these stops offer an easy way to introduce children to the food grown around them, with a few tasty souvenirs for the trip home.
Step Into the Past
For curious kids who want to know how everything works, visit Morningstar Mill.
The heritage site features a working grist mill rebuilt in 1872, with original machinery powered by the same water source used more than a century ago. Free tours of the mill and the Morningstar family home offer a glimpse into how families once lived and worked.
For curious kids, it is a chance to step into the past and imagine what life was like when the mill was still at the heart of the community.
Follow the Maple Trail
Older kids and tweens can discover what happens in the sugar bush after maple season ends at White Meadows Farms.
Recommended for visitors aged 12 and older, the Discover Maple Tour includes a tractor-pulled wagon ride through the sugar bush, a guided forest walk and a visit to the sugar shack. Along the way, families can learn how maple syrup is made and finish with a tasting.
Naturally, the tasting is an important part of the research!
The tour runs on weekends from September 7 through October 25, with advance booking recommended.
Join the Grape & Wine Celebration
The Niagara Grape & Wine Festival brings family programming to Montebello Park on September 26 and 27.
Kids can burn off some energy in the TELUS Family Fun Zone, where inflatables, face painting, crafts and other activities will be available throughout the afternoon.
On Sunday, September 27, children can become part of the celebration during the Pied Piper Parade for Kids. Young participants are invited to dress up and join the colourful procession around Montebello Park at 2 p.m. Afterward, families can gather to watch the Mayor’s Invitational Grape Stomp.
A permission form is required for children joining the parade, but families can complete it in advance or at the park.
Give Them Their First Music Festival
If your kids already have strong opinions about the car playlist, they may be ready for the Cicada Music & Arts Festival.
Cicada returns to Henley Island on October 2 and 3 with three stages of Canadian music, a makers market and local food and drink. Strollers, children’s wagons, blankets and folding chairs are welcome, making it easier for families to settle in and experience the festival in a way that works for them.
Children aged 12 and younger receive free admission with an adult, although a complimentary child ticket must still be reserved. Discounted youth tickets are also available for ages 12 to 17.
Start with a favourite artist, explore between sets and let the kids discover what makes live music feel completely different from listening at home.
Let Them Make Something
From September 18 to October 4, St. Catharines Culture Days invites families to experience arts, culture and heritage through free activities across the city.
Rather than asking kids to quietly look from a distance, Culture Days gives them opportunities to participate, experiment, and discover something new. Browse the St. Catharines event guide together and choose an activity based on what already captures their imagination.
Maybe they leave with a new skill. Maybe they leave covered in paint. Both count as a successful day.
