Host City

The City of St. Catharines, in partnership with St. Catharines World Rowing and Rowing Canada Aviron (RCA), is proud to host the 2024 World Rowing Senior, Under 23 and Junior Championships.

The competition will bring approximately 2000 athletes from around the world to St. Catharines’ Royal Canadian Henley Rowing Course.

The city has hosted two World Rowing Championships before in 1970 and 1999. It is the largest rowing event in the world. The City of St. Catharines is the largest municipality in the Niagara Region and is the urban centre of Niagara. St. Catharines provides close proximity to Niagara Falls, Toronto and Buffalo. Accessible by car, train, boat and air, access three border crossings within 35 minutes of St. Catharines.

About the Venue

As the largest city in the Niagara region, St. Catharines is home to the Henley Rowing Course located on Martindale Pond in the historical village of Port Dalhousie, where major national and international rowing competitions have been hosted for more than 100 years. The Henley Rowing Course is a Category A international rowing course, well-known as a champions course throughout the world, the Henley rowing course is 120 metres wide and offers 2200 metres of straight length racing spread across 8 racing lanes.

Each lane is 13.5 metres wide, with a water depth of 3.5 metres. While the Henley Rowing Course is ideal for competition, a new 13,000 square foot world class training facility is opening in 2022 Featuring an ergometer room, weight training area, indoor training tank, office space, and accessible washrooms, including shower facilities, this new centre of rowing excellence will provide year-round fitness and training for athletes.

A new Henley Rowing Centre opening in the summer of 2022, will be fully accessible, with universal change rooms, fitness rooms (with rowing ergometers and other exercise equipment), and a multipurpose training, event and administrative/support space.

Athletes Village

Athletes and coaches alike will have access to Brock University’s state-of-the-art fitness facilities. The Leo LeBlanc Rowing Centre features an eight-person tank that allows rowers to simulate on-water training. In addition to 30 ergometers, the facility also hosts two Row Perfect ergometers for indoor training.

Competitors will also have access to an indoor running track, 500 acres of peaceful, beautiful grounds situated atop the Niagara Escarpment and can enjoy hiking along the Bruce Trail. All amenities offered are within a safe and secure campus environment, including 24 hour-a-day security. 

Dedicated shuttle service will operate daily between the athletes village Henley Rowing Course. Shuttles will have athletes arriving in advance of training and race schedules and will run every 30 minutes.
